Animal Rights A Case For Animal Intelligence - 1217 Words

Animal Rights: A Case for Animal Intelligence Starting in the 17th century, enlightenment philosophers contemplated animal consciousness and its subsequent implications on animal rights. Descartes viewed animals as a modern-day machine: organic beings that only act instinctually. Thus, Descartes critically distinguished humans and animals based on their respective capacity for reason: since animals supposedly lack the ability to learn, they forego fundamental human rights. However, animal mind philosophy gradually shifted towards the end of the 19th century as Charles Darwin recorded notes of various species around the world. For example, Darwin observed an earthworm consuming leaves in an intelligent, non-instinctual way that, to him,†¦show more content†¦So, Cartesian Dualism offers an empirical and partially objective way to measure animals, and will be the basis for a contemporary test to assess an animal’s abilities. Clearly, animal intelligence clearly cannot be measured simply, since each animal must be in spected individually to assess its competency. Therefore, animals should be considered intelligent if they meet a majority of the following requirements: an ability to communicate and understand, self-consciousness, high relative size of brain to body mass (= ~2% of total mass), an ability to solve new problems using reasoning without relying on instinct, a desire to seek pleasure and avoid pain, and an ability to act empathetically. Of course, there will always exist animals that almost meet these requirements, but do not quite fulfill a majority, so animal intelligence must be viewed in terms of relative intelligence. Ultimately, although some animals today lack a mind capable of creating solutions to novel problems and sensing oneself (self-consciousness), several animals today, including dolphins, parrots, and chimpanzees, meet these requirements to be considered intelligent beings and thus should be entitled to the same inalienable rights as humans proportionally to their intel lect. Dolphins exemplify high animal intelligence because of their unique levels of self-awareness and ability to learn and teach each other. Problem Essays - Honda, Hatchbacks, Subcompact Cars, Compact Cars

Problem The problem with the Honda Motor Company is the issue of whether or not to integrate two very different cultures, American and Japanese. In order for Honda to be competitive and successful in the global market, the Japanese division needs to adjust their current management style. If they should decide to model their operations after their successful American division, they will face many conflicting cultural differences that will make the transition difficult. By adopting some of the American business culture into their business operations, the Japanese division will once again become successful. Factors of the Case-Analysis The Honda Motor Company has come to the realization that it can no longer try to operate in a fully democratic manner in relation to its increase in size. This became apparent to them when their sales dropped from a third place tie with Mitsubishi to a fourth place finish behind their competitors in the Japanese market. In comparison with that, the United States operations of Honda began showing positive sales increases and had moved into the fourth position in the market, behind the Big Three U.S. automakers. Honda of Japan must develop a strategy that will enable to begin selling more cars. This plan must take into account Honda's competitors, it must reconcile the different management styles of its two divisions, and ultimately it must increase the profits of the company. The different management styles of the divisions must be addressed in any action plan. The U.S. division has shown a new flexibility in responding to changing markets. This came from its shift to a policy of localization. This was a four-part process involving products, production, profits, and management. The management worked hard to blend the rapid decision making style of the traditional American corporation with the democratic management style of the Japanese corporation. The end result was structured around a team concept where all members of the team shared tasks. Management was expected to learn both cultures with the basic concept of reinvesting profits not only in the plant, but also into the community and society. Honda of America was successful in its blending of management styles. The question is whether or not the Japanese division will be able to handle these changes, or whether they should even attempt them? Alternative Solutions The first solution that Honda of Japan may want to try is to take the successful American/ Japanese blending present in the American division and transplant that success to Japan. By being able to make more rapid decisions, Honda of Japan will be able to react more swiftly to the changing markets, and ultimately sell more automobiles. The different management styles that are present in the two divisions would be brought into line. This would cut back on communication and cultural problems between divisions, and would allow for the two to trade successful programs across the Pacific. The only question is whether or not the Japanese division would be able to accept these changes. In the end, it is clear that they will. The bottom line is profits, and to increase profits Honda needs to sell more cars. The Japanese division is losing ground in sales, and it needs something to jumpstart change. Honda of America showed that the blended style could work. Another solution would be to leave the Honda of Japan division alone. Instead of bringing in a blended style of management, allow it to focus on what it always has done, and find Japanese ways to get competitive again. With an increased focus on research and development, and a renewed sense of national pride, Honda may be able to recover on its own. There would be no disruption when two different cultures were thrown together in the offices of Honda. Evaluation and Choice If the two management styles were blended, Honda of Japan would find itself better poised to recover lost sales in the marketplace. Management would be swift to react to important decisions for the company. In addition, both Honda of America and Honda of Japan would find themselves better able to communicate. With similar styles, strategies could be more easily shared and implemented. Leaving Honda of Japan alone would rely on Japanese management to come up with plans to sell more cars. However,

Basics of DETC Accreditation for Correspondence Schools

Basics of DETC Accreditation for Correspondence Schools The Distance Education Training Council (DETC) has been accrediting correspondence schools since 1955. Today, hundreds of distance learning colleges and high schools have been granted accreditation from the DETC. Many graduates from DETC accredited schools have used their degrees to gain promotions or to continue in their studies. But, others have been disappointed to find that their degrees do not hold the same weight as diplomas from regionally accredited schools. If youre considering enrolling in a school with DETC accreditation, make sure you get the facts first. Heres what you need to know: The Good – Approved by the CHEA and USDE Both the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the United States Department of Education recognize the DETC as a legitimate accrediting agency. The DETC has proved itself to have high standards and a thorough review process. You wont find any diploma mills here. The Bad – Trouble Transferring The biggest problem with DETC accreditation is that regionally accredited schools dont view it as their equal. While credits from regionally accredited schools may transfer to other regionally accredited schools easily, credits from DETC accredited schools are often looked upon with suspicion. Even some schools with DETC accreditation view transcripts from regionally accredited schools as superior. The Ugly – A Battle With Regionally Accredited Schools If youre planning on transferring schools or pursuing additional study, be aware that each school has its own transfer policy. Some schools may accept your DETC credits unconditionally. Some may not give you full credit. Some may reject your transcript completely. A study conducted by the DETC showed that, of the students who attempted to transfer credits to a regionally accredited school, two-thirds were accepted and one-third were rejected. The DETC blames the rejected credits in part on anti-competitive business practices in higher education. Whatever the case, be aware that rejection is very possible. A Solution – Plan Ahead If you want to make sure that your transcript from a DETC accredited school will be accepted when you transfer, make a list of potential transfer schools. Call each one and ask for a copy of their transfer policy. Another good strategy is to check out the Higher Education Transfer Alliance database. Schools in this alliance have agreed to be open to schools with any type of accreditation that is approved by the CHEA or USDE – including the Distance Education Training Council.

Discourse Community Analysis Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1

Discourse Community Analysis - Assignment Example The language used in neighborhoods is quite different from other discourse communities. The neighborhood community which I am going to discuss here is of my childhood which brings back my thoughts about how I developed as a mature individual. It was through our usage of language that people knew as to which neighborhood we belonged to. Language comprises an important part of the daily communication sector between individuals. If languages for specific discourse communities were not recognized then it would be completely impossible for individuals to segregate communities or to identify them. The language which I am going to emphasize in this essay revolves around me and my fellow childhood friends who were my neighbors. The language that we used in our neighborhood was clearly understood by our members only and if any outsider intruded in our territory it would be quite difficult for him to grasp the original meaning of our words. A common philosophy was made in our neighborhood as to who should be taught our norms and who should be not. Although new neighbors were welcomed by us in the neighborhood but it took them sometime to get settled with the new discourse community. By usage of language here it is meant that all the aspects of language ranging from minute to the broad ones are being considered here. These aspects of language can include words, gestures, phrases and facial expressions. We the children of our neighborhood had specific nicknames for our friends. In our language these friends were called ‘buddies’. Not only was language verbal only but it also consisted the broad factors of appearance. We had specific sort of signs in our appearance which helped the other ‘buddies’ to recognize us. As one of my neighborhood friend was called ‘Cappy’, it denoted that he always wore a cap. And similarly a friend

MITOSISMEIOSIS Lab Report Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

MITOSISMEIOSIS - Lab Report Example This is followed by separation of daughter cells. Meiosis is the type of cell division by which germ cells (eggs and sperm) are produced. Meiosis was first observed by the Belgian cytologist Pierre-Joseph van Beneden in 1887. Meiosis involves a reduction in the amount of genetic material. It comprises two successive nuclear divisions with only one round of DNA replication. One parent cell, at the end of one meiotic division, produces four daughter cells. Daughter cells have half the number of chromosomes found in the original parent cell and with crossing over, are genetically different. Meiosis differs from mitosis primarily because there are two cell divisions in meiosis, resulting in cells with a haploid number of chromosomes. Cell division is especially rapid in the growing root tips of sprouting seeds. The chromosomes in dividing root tip cells can be demonstrated if, after sprouting seeds or bulbs, and harvesting the young root tips, and then fix, acid digest, stain, squash, and view them under a microscope. The root tip is the place of intense mitotic activity. This region is three dimensional and individual cells cannot be seen. It is therefore necessary to separate the cells out into a thin layer. Plant cells are glued together by the middle lamella of calcium pectate. Hydrochloric acid will dissolve this calcium pectate but leave the cellulose cell wall unaffected. In addition the acid kills and fixes the cell contents in position. Acetic orcein stains nuclei and not the cytoplasm. 1. The apical 5mm from the tip of a growing lateral root of a broad bean was carefully cut. 2. The root tip was placed in a watch glass containing acetic orcein stain and 1mol dm-3 hydrochloric acid in the approximate proportions 10 parts stain to 1 part acid. 3. Allowed to warm for five minutes by passing repeatedly through a low Bunsen flame. 4. The fixed root tip was placed on a microscope slide and two drops of acetic orcein were added. 5. The root tip was broken up without destroying the arrangement of the cells, and the root tip was spread out as thinly as possible. 6. A cover slip was placed over the root tip, and covered it with blotting paper and squashed gently by pushing down on the cover slip. 7. The slide was warmed gently to intensify the stain, by quickly passing through a low Bunsen burner flame a few times. 8. The slide was examined for identifying any stage of mitosis. Results Mitosis The four phases of mitosis- Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase- were observed under the microscope. The different phases were identified based on the unique chromatin organization features: 1. Interphase: Each chromosome undergoes replication, making an identical copy of itself. At this point, the chromosomes are still long and thin, and are not visible inside the nucleus. Cells spend most of their life in this non-reproductive phase. 2. Prophase: The chromosomes coil and shorten, and become visible. It becomes apparent that the chromosomes have duplicated. Pairs of identical chromosomes remain

Children Need to be Encouraged :: Teaching Education Essays

Children Need to be Encouraged As we know, children spend about thirteen years of their childhood (if they graduate) in school around their peers and teachers. Most children go home to busy households where parents do not spend quality time, such as; listening, and disciplining them like they need to. So when these children go into the school the next day, they need and adult to pat them on the back, listen to them, discipline them, and encourage them to keep on trying. Children need to be encouraged so they will try harder. I want to there to give them that extra push that they deserve because many teachers gave me that encouragement to me. These days encourageable, energetic, and determined teachers become evermore important in today’s busy society. Teaching children I would incorporate all of these philosophies such as; perennialism, progressivism, behaviorism, essentialism, existentialism, and social reconstructionism in my instructional curriculum. For example, including perennialism in which, it is necessary to teach elementary students morals, such as; sharing, not cheating, and even playing fair (like in sports). Progressivism will be used in my instruction because cooperative learning activities will take place. I will use reinforcement rewards with computers, stickers, and candy; which will display the philosophy of behaviorism reflected in my classroom. I will encourage free-will in my students by letting them make choices such as; the book they want to read or letting them decide whether or not they want to do extra credit; which would demonstrate a small part of the existentialism philosophy I support. I believe it is also necessary to educate elementary students on other cultures so they will be aware of the similarities and differences compared to their own culture; which is how I will incorporate social reconstructionism into my classroom. However, the basis to hold everything into a functional curriculum I would use the essentialist philosophy; in which I would include all of the basic subjects in every week’s lesson plan to create a structural predictive atmosphere so the students know what is happening next. Students need repetition.

Social Media Academic Essay

English 1020 October 31 2011 Menial Media: Employees Waste Hours of Time on the Internet Many people agree that social networking in the workplace is just asking for disaster and loss of productivity. Having different types of social networks in the workplace could also lead to uncomfortable situations between coworkers that could be bad for business. However, some disagree and believe that these sites can bring coworkers closer together. Not only do they believe it would bring coworkers together, they also say that this could increase business due to the ‘family-like' style that the given office has.Although this may be true in some cases, studies show that the majority of the time, social networking is one of the downfalls of a company because of websites such as Wiki Links, Facebook and Twitter that cause disturbances in the workplace and may even cause some of the company's private information to be leaked. Because social networking sites are such a distraction and cause ti me to be taken away from productivity, they should be banned from the workplace for employees. Bringing social networking into the workplace is sometimes risky for one who is applying to get a job.Employers can research future prospects and see what their online life is like. Although a person may not be able to be completely understood solely by their social networking site, an employer might judge them based off of it. For example, had someone had a picture of themselves tagged online for the public to see, an employer might deem that bad publicity for the company and decide not to hire this person. However, those who apply for jobs have options to set their accounts on private and social networking companies are not held responsible for the material posted. When joining either MySpace or Facebook [or Twitter], the user must agree to the terms of service and to the Web sites privacy policies† (Elzweig and Peeples â€Å"Using Social†). If anything negative happens in t he line of a person not being hired for a job due to a social networking site, that site will not be held accountable. In a few cases this does work out to the benefit of the applier. â€Å"A CareerBuilder survey of more than 2,500 employers, released in August of this year, indicated 35 percent of respondents use social media to promote their companies†(Hunt â€Å"Finders Keepers†).This means that there are endless opportunities for people to find jobs on advertisements of social networking sites. However, a company can also use these sites to see past jobs and responsibilities and check up on their background. Again, this is good for some people, but for others it is a nightmare having to go through their networking site and clear up their information. It is absurd for businesses to meddle in affairs that do not concern them. As long as an employee is doing his job right, then employers should mind their own.Employers who use social networking sites to ‘check u p' or ‘review' their employees are not being considerate to the personal lives of their workers. If, perhaps, an applier has made it past the stage of being handpicked and selected through the unfair means of social networking, he should not be allowed to access his personal networking site during work hours. This is a major distraction that could cause hours of work and productivity to be put off so that employees can update statuses, tweet, and check personal emails. Most business workers admit to spending at least one hour of their work time on a social networking site.Should companies be responsible for paying employees for this hour of free time? Only 10% of business allow their workers to be on social networking sites whenever they please (Schiller â€Å"Employers Crack†). Some argue that these sites are simply ‘mind refreshers' for employees. However, many others make an even more valid point that if a worker really needed a ‘mind refresher', then he should go on a ten minute walk outside: less productivity lost, and much more healthy. Social networking sites cause too much distraction in the workplace and should not be allowed. If the distraction of checking the website a few times a day is not enough, then consider the possibility of cyberfights. Employees upsetting each other over these sites is begging for disaster. Disgruntled employees lead to an unhappy workplace, so why allow the possibility of that to happen? Yes, it could be said that these social networks could lead to a ‘family-like environment', however the possibility for the latter is much more probable. Coworkers disagreeing with each others' personal lives is a major hazard to the stability of the workplace and could potentially lead to an employee being fired or suspended.Embarrassing, childish, and shameful arguments happen over the internet every day. One lawyer speaks,†I don't need the world knowing every time I make a comment [. . . ] there's a l ot that you can do to tweak your settings† (Schaffer â€Å"Online Networking†). What would stop these arguments from happening between coworkers in a workplace? Even ‘friending' coworkers is a potential problem, especially if the operator of the account does not like work or does not like the people at work and forgets the fact that they have been ‘friends'.This occupational hazard could easily be avoided by not allowing social networking sites in the workplace. Social networks are meant for ones personal life; work is not ones personal life, so one shouldn't mix the two. It is a bit of a gray area for most people because they do not know whether they should add coworkers onto their sites or not. Workers should work during work time and play during play time. The two should never be mixed. It is simply unprofessional to have a Facebook page up while at a work desk. There is a right time for everything, and the right time for social networking and communicatin g is for spare time , not working. Social Networking sites waste time and resources for the company. â€Å"If one employee spends one hour of company time on Facebook everyday, it potentially costs his or her employer more than $6,200 per year† (â€Å"Facebook Costs†). This time spent playing on social networking sites is losing businesses money, companies are better off just letting employees go home an hour early without pay while banning social networking sites, than allowing workers to waste this money.Another hazard of allowing personal lives to clash with work lives, is the material that is posted. It is almost too much energy to make sure that the boss cannot see when, â€Å"Called in sick to work- Fishing Day! † is posted as a status. This could end a current career. Once, I worked in a clothing store where a girl called in sick, only to post on twitter a few hours later that she and her friends were having a sleepover. This seems pretty harmless, and al though I did not care, my boss was very upset. She left a memo on the board the next day saying that if people were not going to be smart about what they posted on their social networking sites, then they would be fired. It is also quite a hassle to make sure that no unflattering pictures that shouldn't be seen by a boss, are not seen. â€Å"If an applicant or employee demonstrates a lack of discretion and judgment by posting spring break photos showing himself or herself apparently intoxicated on a [social networking] page, an employer who finds these photos online may consider the photos when deciding [. . . ] to retain the employee† (Baker â€Å"How Far†).Some say that people who are this careless should be fired anyway, but most people are completely forgetful of who they have accepted as their Facebook friend and sometimes just don't think before they post. This scenario could be completely avoided if work and social media were not mixed. The ‘Basic Informati on' section on social networking sites is a factor that could ruin many relationships at work. At work, coworkers probably do not know the entire background detail of many of their colleagues. Easy research could lead to uncalled for prejudices against others.Social networking sites are taken out of context when they are brought to the work place. That is not what they were meant for. Judgmental coworkers may read a fellow workers information and automatically decide not to like them because of the information put. The hasty generalization that is caused by these types of sites are negative because it is hard to get to know someone unless time has been spent with them. Social networking sites allow for the ‘time spent' factor to be taken away and hasty generalization on character to be in place. Even though the benefits of networking are obvious, the process of meeting new people, establishing regular contact and building meaningful relationships, is consistently challengingâ € (Crappell â€Å"Preparing for Professional†). These sites make it easier to avoid face to face conversation with a person, and just assume that a person is exactly like their online profile. Accidentally talking bad about a ‘friended' colleague on a social networking site might be one of the most horrifying things a worker could do, unless this worker was talking bad about his boss. This isn't considered cyber-fights or cyber-bullying because it was purely an accident, and the gossiped about colleague knows that. For example, posting on Facebook that the man in the cubicle to the right smells bad is not a good idea; especially due to the face that he is bored and on Facebook as well. He sees this and does not want confrontation, so he picks the alternative: The Silent Treatment. Social networking sites cause grown adults to act like children. People argue that this can be prevented by simply paying attention. That, however, doesn't factor in the fact that people for get names every day and could very easily forget the name of the person that sits in the cubicle to the right. Social networking sites are not the places for colleagues to mingle and these sites should definitely not be brought in the workplace if they have the potential to cause this many problems. The viruses that these networks could bring in are often overlooked. Many focus on the loss of productivity, the arguments and the mixture of the office and the home. However, not many workers realize the threats that they could be causing their companies. A recent FBI report indicates that phishing scams are becoming more common on social networking sites through a combination of viruses, hacked accounts, and decoy messages† (Schiller â€Å"Phishing Scams†). Personal information and company information may be accessed through these sights and that is a major hazard for these companies. At a local restaurant, one of the employees got on Facebook and was sharing information w ith a friend. Little did this employee know that the computer was being hacked. She let out way too much personal information about herself and ended up having to get a new credit card and change her Facebook password. The dangers of these sites are unbelievable and the risk factors should be left outside of the workplace. Social networking is a distraction in the workplace that hinders work and can cause dangerous viruses to come through the computer. It causes workers to lose sight of their work while allowing them access to look at other coworkers online. It also allows room for dangers such as company secrets and personal information to be leaked. Social networking is not a good thing for the work place because of the extreme loss of productivity and money that is caused primarily by these sites. It may appear beneficial to the bonding of the company, but socializing time for coworkers should be set up at breaks from work and by voice only, not by a social networking site. Ones wo rk and ones personal life should not be intermingled by these sites. By banning these sites from the workplace, offices will be more efficient, and businesses will be better protected from hackers and spammers. Works Cited Baker, Natasha J. â€Å"How Far is Too Far? Analysis Of The Lies Hollywood Told Us Love And...

Analyzing Opposing Arguments Stephan Babich s blog post entitled, The Fall of the Female Protagonist in Kids Movies, and Richard Lawson and Jen Doll s article, The Lies Hollywood Told Us: Love and Romance Edition†, are rhetorical arguments that attempt to support a notion about an explicit aspect of motion-picture theatre. In Babich s post, he writes about how women are hardly ever the protagonist in kid s movies. The goal of his argument is to persuade avid animation movie watchers that future films should have a female playing the leading role. The main idea of Lawrence and Doll s article is to convince men and women who frequently watch romance movies that they should not expect the romantic situations and endings that Hollywood†¦show more content†¦In Babich’s post, he begins by talking about the transition from hand drawn films to computer animated movies, saying that, â€Å"†¦the new computer-animated films drove their hand-drawn cousin aside†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Babich 235). His next argument is that popular production companies like Disney, Pixar, and Dreamworks avoided using female protagonist for a long time after box office showed triumph for computer-animated movies, something Babich claims to be the cause of the shift (Babich 236). Babich continues by saying that the storyline of kid’s animation movies would not be affect if a female played the lead. He then talks about sexism in these films and the switch from human characters to inanimate objects (Babich 236-238). His cause and effect style of writing this post gives his audience a sense of understanding about the topic, because each idea leads up to the argument of his discussion. In Lawson and Doll’s article, each part of their argument is broken down and elaborated under subtitles. These included: You will never have to choose between two amazing men (or women), You will not find someone ten years after you met them, and, You will never fall in love with a hooker with a heart of gold (L awson and Jen Doll 230-231). This gives the authors the freedom to directly address each scenario they view as inaccurate, as their own entity. Ancient Maya Beekeeping The Stingless Bee (Melipona beecheii)

Beekeeping—providing a safe residence for bees in order to exploit them—is an ancient technology in both the Old and New Worlds. The oldest known Old World beehives are from Tel Rehov, in what is today Israel, about 900 B.C.E.; the oldest known in the Americas is from the Late Preclassic or Protoclassic period Maya site of Nakum, in the Yucatà ¡n peninsula of Mexico, between 300 B.C.E.–200/250 C.E. American Bees Before the Spanish colonial period and long before the introduction of European honeybees in the 19th century, several Mesoamerican societies including Aztec and Maya kept hives of stingless American bees. There are about 15 different bee species native to the Americas, most of which live in humid tropical and subtropical forests. In the Maya region, the bee of choice was Melipona beecheii, called xunaan kab or colel-kab (royal lady) in the Maya language. As you might guess from the name, American bees dont sting—but they will bite with their mouths to defend their hives. Wild stingless bees live in hollow trees; they dont make honeycombs but rather store their honey in round sacks of wax. They make less honey than European bees, but American bee honey is said to be sweeter. Precolumbian Uses of Bees The products of bees—honey, wax, and royal jelly—were used in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica for religious ceremonies, medicinal purposes, as a sweetener, and to make the hallucinogenic honey mead called balche. In his 16th century text Relacion de las Cosas Yucatà ¡n, Spanish bishop Diego de Landa reported that indigenous people traded beeswax and honey for cacao seeds (chocolate) and precious stones. After the conquest, tax tributes of honey and wax went to the Spanish, who also used beeswax in religious activities. In 1549, over 150 Maya villages paid 3 metric tons of honey and 281 metric tons of wax in tax to the Spanish. Honey was eventually replaced as a sweetener by sugar cane, but stingless bee wax continued in importance all through the colonial period. Modern Maya Beekeeping Indigenous Yucatec and Chol  in the Yucatan peninsula today still practice beekeeping on communal lands, using modified traditional techniques. Bees are kept in hollow tree sections called jobà ³n, with the two ends closed by a stone or ceramic plug and a central hole through which bees can enter. The jobà ³n are stored in a horizontal position and the honey and wax is retrieved a couple times a year by removing the end plugs, called panuchos. Typically the average length of the modern Maya jobon is between 50-60 centimeters (20-24 inches) long, with a diameter of about 30 cm (12 in) and walls more than 4 cm (1.5 in thick). The hole for the bee entryway is typically less than 1.5 cm (.6 in) in diameter.   At the Maya site of Nakum, and in a context firmly dated to the late preclassic period  between 300 B.C.E.–C.E. 200, was found a ceramic jobon (or quite possibly an effigy). Archaeology of Maya Beekeeping The jobon from the Nakum site is smaller than modern ones, measuring only 30.7 cm long (12 in), with a maximum diameter of 18 cm (7 in) and an entry hole only 3 cm (1.2 in) in diameter. The external walls are covered with striated designs. It has removable ceramic panuchos at each end, with diameters of 16.7 and 17 cm (about 6.5 in). The difference is size may be a result of the different bee species being taken care of and protected.   The labor associated with beekeeping is mostly protection and custodial duties; keeping the hives away from animals (mostly armadillos and raccoons) and the weather. That is achieved by stacking the hives in an A-shaped frame and building a thatch-roofed palapa or lean-to over the whole: beehives are typically found in small groups near residences.   Maya Bee Symbolism Because most of the materials used to make beehives—wood, wax, and honey—are organic, archaeologists have identified the presence of beekeeping at pre-Columbian sites by the recovery of paired panuchos. Artifacts such as incense burners in the shapes of beehives, and images of the so-called Diving God, likely a representation of the bee god Ah Mucen Cab, have been found on the walls of temples at Sayil and other Maya sites. The Madrid Codex (known to scholars as the Troano or Tro-Cortesianus Codex) is one of the few surviving books of the ancient Maya. Among its illustrated pages are male and female deities harvesting and collecting honey, and conducting various rituals associated with beekeeping. The Aztec Mendoza Codex shows images of towns giving jars of honey to the Aztecs for tribute.   Current Status of American Bees While beekeeping is still a practice by Maya farmers, because of the introduction of the more productive European honeybee, the loss of forest habitat, the Africanization of honey bees in the 1990s, and even climate change bringing destructive storms into the Yucatan, stingless beekeeping has been severely reduced. Most of the bees farmed today are European honey bees.   Those European honey bees (Apis mellifera) were introduced in the Yucatan in the late 19th or early 20th centuries. Modern apiculture with bees and using moveable frames began to be practiced after the 1920s and making Apis honey became a principal economic activity for the rural Maya area by the 1960s and 1970s.  In 1992, Mexico was the fourth largest honey producer in the world, with an average annual production of 60,000 metric tons of honey and 4,200 metric tons of beeswax. A total of 80% of the beehives in Mexico are kept by small farmers as a subsidiary or hobby crop. Although stingless bee farming was not actively pursued for decades, today there is a regrowth in interest and a sustained effort by enthusiasts and indigenous farmers who are beginning to restore the practice of stingless bee farming to the Yucatan.   Sources Bianco B. 2014. The Indian Removal Act and Its Effects free essay sample

The Indian Removal Act and Its Effects As the United States developed and carved its path to becoming a great nation, a great number of issues arose. Issues, which if not dealt with effectively and in best interest of the young nation, would retard and thus stunt Americas journey to achieving what it has become today: A great nation. One such issue that had to be dealt with was the Indian removal to the west. The colonies were expanding and growing in number, which meant more land was needed. Colonists encouraged the Indians to move west in order to achieve this. When Andrew Jackson was granted presidency, he passed the Indian Removal Act in 1830, which mainly stated that Indian removal was both a priority and a policy. Although many argue that the Indian Removal Act was unjust and unfair, it was an essential and necessary measure which needed to be taken in order for the United States to grow both geographically and intellectually as a nation. We will write a custom essay sample on The Indian Removal Act and Its Effects or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page When Jackson proposed the Indian Removal Act, Chief Justice John Marshall and the Supreme Court rule against it.Jackson refuses to support Supreme Court rule and states John Marshall has made his decision, now let him enforce it. Jackson goes on to pass the law, and in the process, he also proposed voluntary emigration in the west for the Indians. He felt that the Indians could preserve their dying culture in the west, by separating them from contact with the settlements of whites, granting them liberty from the power of America, and enabling these Indian tribes to pursue happiness in their own way and under their own rude institutions. One can argue that the taking of the land that by natural right belonged to these Indian tribes was unjust, and that the Jackson policy was against the Supreme Court rule, but like previously mentioned before, certain measures had to be taken in order for the United States to keep going onward and forward on its quest to becoming a great nation. Jackson, and many others who also supported the Indian removal act, recognized this and thus were in favor of the relocation of the Indians to the west.No one stopped Thomas Jefferson when he went through with the Louisiana Purchase. Although it was against his own beliefs, Jefferson recognized the purchase as an opportune chance that would benefit the United States in its best interest. Jackson acted in the same way and for the same reasons when he passed the Indian removal act in 1830. The Trail of Tears as it came to be known, was the route to that Jackson had the Indians travel to their new homes out west over all a brutal and tragic way to have done so. As many as 100, 000 Indians were uprooted from their homes and were taken from their ancestral homeland to the Indian Territory out west. Many Indians died along the way, including 4,000 of the 1 5,000 Cherokees that made that march. It is definitely recognized that the Indian removal to the west could have accomplished in a more humane way. Be that as it may, one cannot deny that the Indian Removal Act itself not necessary for the onward growth of the United States. All in all, the Indian Removal Act and the Trail of Tears, no matter how tragic the loss and measures taken, was essential and necessary for the United States to grow both geographically and intellectual as a young nation. Jackson, with the best interests of America in mind with each and every one of the decisions he made, dealt with the issue in an ostensibly effective way.

The eNotes Blog And the Oxford Word of the Year isSelfie

And the Oxford Word of the Year isSelfie Must. Remind. Self..   The OED is not an arbiter of, but a chronicler of,   English language use. Every year, the Powers-That-Be lean over the windowsills located high atop their Ivory Towers and cock an ear towards the milling crowds below. When they hear a word they do not recognize being shouted often enough, they dip their quills into wells of octopus ink and inscribe that word on gold-rimmed parchment. Okay, not really.   Actually, its only been since 2004 that Oxford has selected a word of the year at all. Judy Pearsall, editorial director at Oxford, explains that a language usage program collects around 150m words of current English in use each month.   The word in 2013 that has become the most frequent was selfie. According to  The Guardian,   The word can be  traced back to a post on an Australian online forum in 2002: Um, drunk at a mates 21st, I tripped ofer [sic] and landed lip first (with front teeth coming a very close second) on a set of steps. I had a hole about 1cm long right through my bottom lip. And sorry about the focus, it was a selfie. So now we can blame Australia for both Crocodile Dundee  and  the word selfie! (Just kidding, mates!)   It is pretty incredible when you see the rise in usage in chart form: Curious what other words made the shortlist? They are: binge-watch (I just binge-watched the entire first season of  Orange is the New Black  in a single day!) bitcoin   (You can try to explain how bitcoin works to me a million times and I will never understand it.) bedroom tax (A lot less sexy than it sounds.) olinguito Seriously.. This is an  olinguito schmeat   (Dale!   Can you make me another schmeat sammich?) You dont want to know.   You clicked it,  didnt you showrooming   (Best Buy employee:   Can I help you? / Literally Everyone: No, thank you.just showrooming.) twerk (Ma! Call the vet!   Either the dogs sick or hes been watchin Miley videos again!) Yes, all worthy contenders.   But none outshone our navel-gazing, this time, quite literally.   As for myself, this is how I take selfies: *takes 50 selfies* *deletes 49* *stares at the one selfie till it turns ugly* *deletes that too*
