Problem The problem with the Honda Motor Company is the issue of whether or not to integrate two very different cultures, American and Japanese. In order for Honda to be competitive and successful in the global market, the Japanese division needs to adjust their current management style. If they should decide to model their operations after their successful American division, they will face many conflicting cultural differences that will make the transition difficult. By adopting some of the American business culture into their business operations, the Japanese division will once again become successful. Factors of the Case-Analysis The Honda Motor Company has come to the realization that it can no longer try to operate in a fully democratic manner in relation to its increase in size. This became apparent to them when their sales dropped from a third place tie with Mitsubishi to a fourth place finish behind their competitors in the Japanese market. In comparison with that, the United States operations of Honda began showing positive sales increases and had moved into the fourth position in the market, behind the Big Three U.S. automakers. Honda of Japan must develop a strategy that will enable to begin selling more cars. This plan must take into account Honda's competitors, it must reconcile the different management styles of its two divisions, and ultimately it must increase the profits of the company. The different management styles of the divisions must be addressed in any action plan. The U.S. division has shown a new flexibility in responding to changing markets. This came from its shift to a policy of localization. This was a four-part process involving products, production, profits, and management. The management worked hard to blend the rapid decision making style of the traditional American corporation with the democratic management style of the Japanese corporation. The end result was structured around a team concept where all members of the team shared tasks. Management was expected to learn both cultures with the basic concept of reinvesting profits not only in the plant, but also into the community and society. Honda of America was successful in its blending of management styles. The question is whether or not the Japanese division will be able to handle these changes, or whether they should even attempt them? Alternative Solutions The first solution that Honda of Japan may want to try is to take the successful American/ Japanese blending present in the American division and transplant that success to Japan. By being able to make more rapid decisions, Honda of Japan will be able to react more swiftly to the changing markets, and ultimately sell more automobiles. The different management styles that are present in the two divisions would be brought into line. This would cut back on communication and cultural problems between divisions, and would allow for the two to trade successful programs across the Pacific. The only question is whether or not the Japanese division would be able to accept these changes. In the end, it is clear that they will. The bottom line is profits, and to increase profits Honda needs to sell more cars. The Japanese division is losing ground in sales, and it needs something to jumpstart change. Honda of America showed that the blended style could work. Another solution would be to leave the Honda of Japan division alone. Instead of bringing in a blended style of management, allow it to focus on what it always has done, and find Japanese ways to get competitive again. With an increased focus on research and development, and a renewed sense of national pride, Honda may be able to recover on its own. There would be no disruption when two different cultures were thrown together in the offices of Honda. Evaluation and Choice If the two management styles were blended, Honda of Japan would find itself better poised to recover lost sales in the marketplace. Management would be swift to react to important decisions for the company. In addition, both Honda of America and Honda of Japan would find themselves better able to communicate. But, others have been disappointed to find that their degrees do not hold the same weight as diplomas from regionally accredited schools. If youre considering enrolling in a school with DETC accreditation, make sure you get the facts first. Heres what you need to know: The Good – Approved by the CHEA and USDE Both the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the United States Department of Education recognize the DETC as a legitimate accrediting agency. Meiosis was first observed by the Belgian cytologist Pierre-Joseph van Beneden in 1887. Meiosis involves a reduction in the amount of genetic material. It comprises two successive nuclear divisions with only one round of DNA replication. One parent cell, at the end of one meiotic division, produces four daughter cells. Daughter cells have half the number of chromosomes found in the original parent cell and with crossing over, are genetically different. Meiosis differs from mitosis primarily because there are two cell divisions in meiosis, resulting in cells with a haploid number of chromosomes. Cell division is especially rapid in the growing root tips of sprouting seeds. The chromosomes in dividing root tip cells can be demonstrated if, after sprouting seeds or bulbs,and harvesting the young root tips, and then fix, acid digest, stain, squash, and view them under a microscope. The root tip is the place of intense mitotic activity. This region is three dimensional and individual cells cannot be seen. It is therefore necessary to separate the cells out into a thin layer. Plant cells are glued together by the middle lamella of calcium pectate. Hydrochloric acid will dissolve this calcium pectate but leave the cellulose cell wall unaffected. Children Need to be Encouraged As we know, children spend about thirteen years of their childhood (if they graduate) in school around their peers and teachers. Most children go home to busy households where parents do not spend quality time, such as; listening, and disciplining them like they need to. So when these children go into the school the next day, they need and adult to pat them on the back, listen to them, discipline them, and encourage them to keep on trying. Children need to be encouraged so they will try harder. I want to there to give them that extra push that they deserve because many teachers gave me that encouragement to me. These days encourageable, energetic, and determined teachers become evermore important in today’s busy society. Teaching children I would incorporate all of these philosophies such as; perennialism, progressivism, behaviorism, essentialism, existentialism, and social reconstructionism in my instructional curriculum. For example, including perennialism in which, it is necessary to teach elementary students morals, such as; sharing, not cheating, and even playing fair (like in sports). Progressivism will be used in my instruction because cooperative learning activities will take place. I will use reinforcement rewards with computers, stickers, and candy; which will display the philosophy of behaviorism reflected in my classroom. I will encourage free-will in my students by letting them make choices such as; the book they want to read or letting them decide whether or not they want to do extra credit; which would demonstrate a small part of the existentialism philosophy I support. I believe it is also necessary to educate elementary students on other cultures so they will be aware of the similarities and differences compared to their own culture; which is how I will incorporate social reconstructionism into my classroom. However, some disagree and believe that these sites can bring coworkers closer together. Not only do they believe it would bring coworkers together, they also say that this could increase business due to the ‘family-like' style that the given office has.Although this may be true in some cases, studies show that the majority of the time, social networking is one of the downfalls of a company because of websites such as Wiki Links, Facebook and Twitter that cause disturbances in the workplace and may even cause some of the company's private information to be leaked. Because social networking sites are such a distraction and cause ti me to be taken away from productivity, they should be banned from the workplace for employees. Bringing social networking into the workplace is sometimes risky for one who is applying to get a job.Employers can research future prospects and see what their online life is like. Although a person may not be able to be completely understood solely by their social networking site, an employer might judge them based off of it. For example, had someone had a picture of themselves tagged online for the public to see, an employer might deem that bad publicity for the company and decide not to hire this person. It is simply unprofessional to have a Facebook page up while at a work desk.There is a right time for everything, and the right time for social networking and communicatin g is for spare time , not working. This seems pretty harmless, and al though I did not care, my boss was very upset.She left a memo on the board the next day saying that if people were not going to be smart about what they posted on their social networking sites, then they would be fired. It is also quite a hassle to make sure that no unflattering pictures that shouldn't be seen by a boss, are not seen. â€Å"If an applicant or employee demonstrates a lack of discretion and judgment by posting spring break photos showing himself or herself apparently intoxicated on a [social networking] page, an employer who finds these photos online may consider the photos when deciding [. . . ] to retain the employee† (Baker â€Å"How Far†).Some say that people who are this careless should be fired anyway, but most people are completely forgetful of who they have accepted as their Facebook friend and sometimes just don't think before they post. This scenario could be completely avoided if work and social media were not mixed. The ‘Basic Informati on' section on social networking sites is a factor that could ruin many relationships at work. At work, coworkers probably do not know the entire background detail of many of their colleagues. Easy research could lead to uncalled for prejudices against others.Social networking sites are taken out of context when they are brought to the work place. That is not what they were meant for. Judgmental coworkers may read a fellow workers information and automatically decide not to like them because of the information put. The hasty generalization that is caused by these types of sites are negative because it is hard to get to know someone unless time has been spent with them. Social networking sites allow for the ‘time spent' factor to be taken away and hasty generalization on character to be in place. Even though the benefits of networking are obvious, the process of meeting new people, establishing regular contact and building meaningful relationships, is consistently challengingâ €  (Crappell â€Å"Preparing for Professional†). These sites make it easier to avoid face to face conversation with a person, and just assume that a person is exactly like their online profile. His next argument is that popular production companies like Disney, Pixar, and Dreamworks avoided using female protagonist for a long time after box office showed triumph for computer-animated movies, something Babich claims to be the cause of the shift (Babich 236). Babich continues by saying that the storyline of kid’s animation movies would not be affect if a female played the lead. He then talks about sexism in these films and the switch from human characters to inanimate objects (Babich 236-238). His cause and effect style of writing this post gives his audience a sense of understanding about the topic, because each idea leads up to the argument of his discussion. In Lawson and Doll’s article, each part of their argument is broken down and elaborated under subtitles. These included: You will never have to choose between two amazing men (or women), You will not find someone ten years after you met them, and, You will never fall in love with a hooker with a heart of gold (L awson and Jen Doll 230-231).
